Jules Chauvet was, at most, the Father of Beaujolais and, at the very least, a champion of the modern French natural winemaking movement. His reach was so profound that he changed how Beaujolais was made, was recognized on an international level and has been immortalised through the reach of his four Morgon-making followers, one of whom was Jean Foillard. These days, Jean's son, Alex, has his own approach to creating reds from Gamay; however, he maintains the integrity and methodology passed down to him. At 25, he has already joined the ranks of the region's most gifted and well-trained producers. He differs from his predecessors by expanding his sights to Brouilly and the Côte de Brouilly, two of Beaujolais's southern-most crus.
Light, vivid ruby. Vibrant red fruit, floral and spice qualities on the mineral-inflected nose take on suggestions of incense and licorice as the wine stretches out. Sappy, incisive and pure, offering palate-staining raspberry, bitter cherry, floral pastille and rhubarb flavors that show a compelling blend of depth and vivacity. Closes very long and subtly chewy, with reverberating florality and polished tannins that come in late.
